During lockdown, many businesses around the world were forced to change how they operated, and for a surprising number, the change proved to be a revelation. As was the case with Swiss design duo Sandra Golay and Alexandre Armand who, due to specialising in photography and stop motion, were unable to work in their usual capacity in a physical studio. Quickly aware of their need to adapt to avoid losing projects, they realised a major shift in their output was needed.
The answer came to them in the form of learning 3D – through applications including Adobe Substance 3D. Having worked with Adobe programs for over 20 years, learning the ropes of this new yet familiar technology was easier than they had imagined. Before long, their entire practice was centred around 3D, and they transitioned from a design studio that was imaginative but ultimately restricted in their output, to one that is forward-facing, adaptable and equally creative.
"Our manual process was meticulous, with a lot of attention to detail”

“When the projects restarted later that year, we were lucky to have customers ready to follow us on our new adventures,” recalls Sandra. “As the projects progressed, we were won over by a more accessible approach to dealing with the concepts.” Not only was Get It Studio now free of the physical requirements of elaborate sets and equipment for stop motion, but the studio was able to respond to briefs quickly and effectively. Adobe Substance 3D, amongst other software, had unlocked a new, streamlined way of working which gave the studio the time and tools needed to experiment endlessly, and to focus on the finer details.
Having made a name for themselves in the early years through their hands-on approach to projects, playing with lighting, colours, shapes and textures to get the exact results they wanted, Sandra and Alexandre realised they didn’t need to give up this DIY spirit by moving to 3D. In fact, tools such as Adobe Substance 3D offered them even more opportunity to get into the nitty-gritty aspects of design work. They could easily create any form or shape they wanted to, and then explore a dizzying amount of materials and finishes from the Adobe Substance library. They were even able to create custom textures based on those from the outside world and integrate it into their design, achieving a “realistic look” that’s filled with scratches, dust and imperfections. For instance, the studio used the fabric on their sofa and applied the texture to the letter ‘R’ of the commission.
“When we moved our creative process to the digital realm to create virtual models and textures, we felt it was essential to keep a distinctly handcrafted aesthetic style”

In making this change, Get It Studio has elevated its creative offering and, in the years since, has worked with a range of high-profile clients such as Google, Uniqlo and Hyundai. “Now we are having fun with 3D, and the only limitation is your imagination,” says Alexandre. Get It Studio has also joined a rapidly growing number of design studios that have transitioned to 3D and immediately reaped the rewards. In fact, this type of work is so sought after that, according to It’s Nice That’s recent 3D Skills Report, 63 per cent of digital creatives are having to turn down 3D projects.
