Summer is edging closer and so is the June edition of Nicer Tuesdays! After the amazing talks in May, we’ve got some great creatives lined up who are sure to inspire. You’ll hear from a prolific text-based and photographic artist, a graphic designer specialising in social impact causes tied especially to Black British culture, and a bold illustrator creating fearless and unapologetic characters.
With text-based art that you can instantly spot in a sea of visuals online, and daring and historically charged photography, Coco Capitán has built a world with her oeuvre. Her practice has offered a way for viewers to engage in social commentary and varying cultures, in fun and sometimes irreverent ways. Also joining us in June is Greg Bunbury, a mission-led graphic designer, creating everything from the Empire Windrush typeface to billboards across the UK under Black Outdoor Art – “a marketing campaign for antiracism”. And lastly, Genie Espinosa, a Barcelona-based illustrator creating grand and assertive women characters for commercial, editorial and personal projects.
In June, MPB will be back again with another activation, this time a photobooth in collaboration with Photobot.co, so be sure to grab a picture with your friends to go along with the memory of some wonderful talks. People who take part in the activation will also have the chance to enter a competition to win the photo equipment used inside the stand courtesy of MPB, worth around £450!
The event will take place on 4 June with doors opening at 6pm. As this is an 18+ event, please bring ID with you to the venue. If you are in need of disability access, please make yourself known to a member of the EartH team on the night or email hello@nicertuesdays.com so we can arrange assistance. Carry on reading to find out more about our incredible line-up of speakers.
With a knack for text-based media and photographic imagery, Coco Capitán has made a name for herself as a multidisciplinary artist branching across the realms of fashion and design. Born in Spain and now based in London, she is best known for her work with the likes of Gucci, Nike, Cos, Dior, Samsung in her commercial practice, and sweeping “word drawings” and irreverent historic photography that has graced the walls of Maximillian William in London, Parco Museum in Tokyo and Maison Européenne De La Photographie in Paris, in her personal practice. In a Q&A with It’s Nice That’s editor-in-chief Matt Alagiah, Coco will discuss her journey from a student who moved to the city to study a BA in photography at University of the Arts London, to the genre-bending artist she is now, creating distinctive and broad works.
Genie Espinosa is a Barcelona-based illustrator working across editorial, campaigns, comics, television and animation, and renowned for creating larger-than-life characters. With a client list that includes the likes of Adobe, Spotify, Refinery29 and Wired, she consistently lends her unique visuals to cutting-edge stories and content. The illustrator will be talking us through her practice, some of her biggest commissions and the power behind her “bold, fearless, strong, angry and unapologetic” characters and works.
Greg Bunbury is best described as a designer at the helm of social impact. Across his career as a designer he has created culturally resonant works particularly in the realm of Black British initiatives. From poster designs for theatre shows, films and social impact campaigns, to the Empire Windrush typeface, commemorating 75 years since the Caribbean community arrived in the United Kingdom in large numbers. Among his design projects is also Black Outdoor Art, an initiative curated and designed by the designer that seeks to champion Black voices through a series of billboards throughout the UK. Examples include one highlighting the #JusticeforChrisKaba campaign, another platforming the original definition of ‘woke’, and one for workers’ rights. The designer will discuss his journey, practice and guiding ethos.
